Blackstorm Labs

Michael Carter is a technologist and entrepreneur who got his start as a network engineer. Michael designed the initial WebSocket protocol for HTML5, a technology that is used on more than 2 billion devices across the world every day. WebSocket made it easy to build a new class of real-time applications like games, stock tickers, chat rooms, and others, that previously would have required up to 20 times the engineering resources.

Building on his passion for real-time web-based applications, Michael founded Blackstorm Labs, where he serves as the CEO, a company focused on building post-app store platforms to help users seamlessly access and share content outside of the app stores. Alongside Rakuten, Blackstorm is a partner in Rakuten Games, a gaming portal for high-performance HTML5 games which is directly integrated into the Rakuten ecosystem. Blackstorm also houses a successful in-house game studio, which has built the hit game EverWing, leading the pack on Facebook’s Instant Games platform.

Michael has also directly advised or helped more than 200 startups on early stage fundraising; together, these companies have raised over $300 million to date. Additionally, Michael is a strategic advisor to the Stanford-StartX fund, and the co-founder of a stealth VC fund.
